তিনি নিজের কর্মদক্ষতা দিয়ে সারাওয়াক রাজ্যে(বর্তমান মালয়েশিয়ার একটি প্রদেশ) বোর্নিও কোম্পানি লিমিটেড এর পরিচালক হন। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় তিনি সারাওয়াকের পক্ষে সম্মুখ যুদ্ধে অংশ নেন। যুদ্ধের পর জাপান সারাওয়াক দখল করে নিলে ও.আর নিজাম গ্রেফতার হয়ে কারা অন্তরিন থাকেন। জেল থেকে মুক্তি দিয়ে দখলদার জাপানীরা তাকে সারাওয়াকের প্রশাসক হিসেবে নিয়োগ দেয়। কিন্তু কিছুদিন পর তিনি অন্যের অধীনে না থেকে নিজ দেশে ফিরে আসার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন৷
১৯৪৮ সালে নিজ দেশে ফিরে তিনি চট্টগ্রামে গ্রাহাম ট্রেডিং কোম্পানির ম্যানেজার হিসেবে যোগদান করেন। সেই থেকে তিনি চট্টগ্রামের উন্নয়নে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেন। তিনি টার্নার গ্রাহামস, রবিনসন ফুডস এর চেয়ারম্যান ছিলেন। তিনি পাকিস্তান সংবিধান প্রণয়ন কমিশনের সদস্য হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। ১৯৫৯ সালে প্রথম বাঙালি উদ্যোক্তা হিসেবে তিনি প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন ইস্টার্ন মার্কেন্টাইল ব্যাংক যা বর্তমান পূবালী ব্যাংক। চট্টগ্রামের টেরীবাজার থেকে শুরু করে কিছুদিন পর আগ্রাবাদ সাত্তার চেম্বারে প্রধান কার্যালয় করা হয়। ও.আর নিজাম ১৯৬০ সাল থেকে ১৯৭০ মৃত্যুর আগ পর্যন্ত চট্টগ্রাম পৌরসভার ভাইস চেয়ারম্যান পদে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।
